Stop Practicing Techniques. Start Making Things

There is a stage in learning metalsmithing when practice is absolutely essential.

Saw straight lines.

File flat surfaces.

Make solder joints.

Create jump rings.

Practice bezels.

Drill holes.

Set stones.

Repeat.

You need those repetitions because your hands are learning things that can't be learned entirely from reading a book or watching a video. But eventually practice can become a hiding place.

You can spend months telling yourself:

I'm not ready to make the piece yet. I need more practice.

At some point, I am going to encourage you to do something uncomfortable. Make the piece anyway.

A project teaches differently than an exercise

An isolated exercise usually has one problem. A project has many. Suppose you practice soldering two pieces of scrap together. That's useful.

But now make a ring.

Suddenly you have to determine the correct length.

Saw accurately.

Prepare the joint.

Keep the ring aligned.

Control the heat.

Round the shank.

Check the size.

Finish the seam.

Maintain the shape while completing every later operation.

None of those steps lives independently anymore.

They interact. And that interaction is where a great deal of real metalsmithing knowledge develops.

You discover what you actually know

Practice can sometimes give us false confidence. You successfully flush set ten stones into a flat piece of copper. Wonderful.

Now flush set one into a curved sterling silver ring with limited wall thickness while keeping the stone level and protecting a finished surface.

Suddenly there are decisions the practice sample never required. That's not proof that your practice failed. It means you're moving into the next level of learning.

I often think of technical exercises as vocabulary. Projects teach you how to construct sentences. Eventually design asks you to write the entire story.

Difficulty is useful data

One of the most productive questions you can ask after completing a project is:

Where did I struggle?

Not:

“Was this good?”

That question is too broad.

Instead ask:

Where did I hesitate?

Where did I have to stop and search for an answer?

Which operation created the most risk?

What part took far longer than expected?

Which result am I not yet able to repeat consistently?

Now you have a learning plan. If soldering repeatedly gives you problems, that's where you practice. If fabrication is strong but stone setting causes uncertainty, work there.

If your pieces function beautifully but the designs still feel unresolved, perhaps your next study area isn't another fabrication technique at all. It may be design.

Don't wait for confidence

This may be one of the biggest traps in craft education. We think confidence comes first. Then we make the difficult thing. Usually it happens in the opposite order.

You make the difficult thing somewhat nervously. You solve several problems. You make mistakes. You discover that one of those mistakes is repairable. You finish.

Then you look at the object and realize:

I know more than I thought I did.

That experience becomes confidence. Confidence built this way is much sturdier than reassurance because it is backed by evidence. You did the thing.

Choose projects slightly beyond you

I am not suggesting that you jump from making your first jump ring directly into fabricating a platinum engagement ring.

The most productive learning projects usually sit just beyond your current skill level. You should recognize most of the territory. Maybe 70 or 80 percent of the project feels familiar.

Then there is that other portion that makes you think:

“I haven't done that before.”

Good.

That is probably where the learning is. If everything in a project is completely familiar, you're reinforcing skills. That has value.

If everything is unfamiliar, you may spend more energy surviving than understanding. But when most of the project is within reach and one or two elements stretch you, the project becomes an excellent teacher.

Finished work reveals connections

This is also why I believe strongly in finishing things. Not every practice sample needs to become jewelry. But you need to regularly take projects all the way through. Finishing teaches lessons fabrication cannot.

How does the piece feel against the body?

Is it too heavy?

Does the clasp work?

Did polishing soften an edge you needed?

Is the stone secure after finishing?

Did your construction sequence make the final cleanup unnecessarily difficult?

Would you make the same design again?

A piece can look successful at the soldering block and reveal five new problems by the time it reaches the polishing bench. You need those lessons too.

Your next project is part of your education

So if you've been waiting to become “good enough” before making the thing you've been thinking about, consider changing the question.

Instead of:

Am I ready to make this?

Ask:

Is this project close enough to my current ability that I can learn from making it?

If the answer is yes, begin.

Sketch it.

Plan your sequence.

Identify the unfamiliar operations.

Make samples where you need them.

Then start building. Because eventually becoming a better metalsmith requires something more than collecting techniques. You have to bring them together.

And sometimes the piece you're not quite sure you're ready to make is exactly the piece that teaches you what you should learn next.
