What Should You Learn Next as a Metalsmith?
One of the most common questions I hear from developing metalsmiths is not about a specific technique. It is much simpler:
What should I learn next?
That question becomes especially difficult once you move beyond the absolute basics.
You may already know how to saw, file, solder, and form metal. You may have made a few rings or set a cabochon. Suddenly there are dozens of directions you could go.
Flush setting.
Prong setting.
Hollow construction.
Stone setting.
Forging.
Chain making.
Engraving.
Advanced soldering.
So how do you decide what comes next? I don’t think the answer is to collect techniques as quickly as possible. I think the better goal is to build skills in a sequence that gives each new technique something solid to stand on.
Build Depth Before You Build Variety
It is tempting to move on the moment you successfully complete a project. You make one bezel setting and think:
Great. Bezel setting—done.
But completing a technique once and understanding it are two very different things
Can you repeat it?
Can you troubleshoot it?
Can you recognize when the dimensions are wrong before soldering?
Can you adjust the process when the stone is slightly different?
That is where deeper learning begins. Before adding a completely new skill, it can be incredibly useful to repeat a familiar technique with a new variable.
Make the same ring in a different gauge.
Set a different shaped stone.
Change the proportions.
Use a different construction method.
That kind of repetition builds judgment.
Let Your Frustrations Guide You
Another way to decide what to learn next is to pay attention to what keeps stopping you. If your solder seams regularly fail, you may not need a new stone-setting technique yet. You may need to strengthen your soldering fundamentals.
If your finished pieces feel bulky, you may need to spend time understanding proportion and material thickness. If your stones never seem to sit properly, measuring and seat cutting may be the next skill to develop.
Your frustrations are often pointing directly toward your next learning opportunity.
Learn Skills That Support Other Skills
Some techniques are valuable because they unlock many others.
Accurate sawing improves nearly everything you fabricate.
Understanding soldering makes complex construction possible.
Learning how metal thickness affects strength improves rings, bezels, clasps, and findings.
Learning how to measure stones accurately makes nearly every setting technique easier.
These foundational skills create leverage. They make future techniques easier to understand because you are no longer struggling with the basics at the same time.
A Useful Progression
There is no single perfect metalsmithing curriculum, but I generally like to think in layers. First, become comfortable with:
sawing, filing, measuring, soldering, annealing, forming, and finishing.
Then begin combining those skills into more controlled fabrication.
Simple rings.
Basic bezels.
Hollow forms.
Small fabricated components.
Then move into techniques where precision matters more.
Flush setting.
Tube setting.
Square and rectangular bezels.
Prong construction.
More complex fabrication.
As your control improves, you can begin exploring techniques that require more design judgment and problem solving. The order is less important than the idea behind it:

You Do Not Need to Learn Everything
This is something I wish more students heard. You do not need to master every metalsmithing technique.
Your goal is not to become a walking encyclopedia of jewelry processes. Your goal is to develop enough technical control that you can make the work you want to make. Eventually, your interests will begin guiding the path.
Maybe you love stones.
Maybe you love forming.
Maybe you love precision fabrication.
Maybe you love surface work.
That is when your learning path becomes your own.
Stay Curious
The best metalsmiths I know are still learning.
Not because they lack skill. Because the craft is enormous. There is always another problem to solve, another material behavior to understand, another technique to refine.So if you are wondering what to learn next, do not worry about finding the perfect answer.
Look at what you already know.
Look at what keeps frustrating you.
Look at the kind of work you want to make.
Your next step is probably sitting somewhere between those three things. And then you build from there.
