I’m Julessa Scofield, a metalsmith, educator, and mentor with more than two decades of experience making, teaching, troubleshooting, and learning from metal.
Here you’ll find practical guidance, skill-building resources, and honest bench-tested instruction designed to help you become a more confident, thoughtful metalsmith.
I’ve Spent Years Learning From the Bench
I have been making jewelry and working in metal for more than twenty years, but I still consider myself a student of the craft.
My work has taken me from the classroom to the studio, from exhibitions to conferences, and through countless hours of experimentation, failed solder seams, unexpected discoveries, and those wonderful moments when the metal finally does exactly what you hoped it would do.
Along the way, I have learned from extraordinary metalsmiths, important books, generous teachers, my own students, and—probably most of all—the metal itself.
That experience shapes the way I teach today.
I believe good mentoring should help you become less dependent on instructions, not more dependent on them.
You Don’t Have to Figure Everything Out Alone
There is a point in learning metalsmithing when following directions is no longer enough.
You start wanting to understand.
You want to know why the solder did not flow.
Why the bezel distorted.
Why one gauge of metal feels right and another does not.
Why a stone sits beautifully in one setting and fights you in another.
Those questions are not signs that you are doing something wrong. They are signs that you are becoming a metalsmith. And that is the work I want to help you

What should I learn next?
That is the kind of teaching I care about.
My goal is not simply to help you complete one project. I want to help you develop the observation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills that allow you to walk back to your own bench and keep going.
